Samsung has been disabling Windows
Update on some of the laptop in which Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 were
distributed in it. Not only does Samsung disable the Windows Update, it
also installs a utility that prevents the user from re-enabling the
feature.
Samsung has distributed his own updated software to pc’s named
“Samsung Update”. In this Software there is an executable file called
“Disable_WindowsUpdate.exe”. This Software creates a time for running
each and every time when the system is rebooted. It doesn’t completely
disable Windows Update, it does change the setting to “Check for updates
but let me choose whether to download or install them”. This behaviour
persists even if the Samsung software is uninstalled; the application
must be manually removed.
This
investigation is handled by Patrick Barker who spoke to the Samsung
representative, who implied for the response that the executable file
was been prevented by Microsoft from USB 3 drivers which is not
compatible with laptop. For example he says if the driver 3.0 is
installed, it will not be compatible with OS. Software update tool must
be required. Thus the Samsung team updating its statement that we are
not blocking the Windows 8.1 OS update, we are providing our users with
the option to choose if and when they want to update the Windows
software on their products.
The problem with this statement is that Samsung isn’t accused of
blocking the installation of Windows 8.1 or any specific update.
Instead, it’s preventing Windows update from operating either in its
default state or after the end-user has manually changed the setting.
